CONNECTOR
The model 885 is a rugged quick disconnect
wing pylon used on some of today's most advanced
tactical aircraft. This efficient design was
originally developed for use in multiple location
on the F/A-18 aircraft; more than 4,000 of these
connectors have been produced during the past
17 years. Model 885 connectors have demonstrated
unmatched performance under some of the most
severe and challenging service conditions that
can confront contemporary military aircraft.
The model 885 was produced for the F/A-18C
and D aircraft with a 140 contact insert. A
barrier on the insert face separates and protects
contacts carrying sensitive signals. The connectors
are self aligning for easy pylon installation
on the ground or flight deck. After the connector
shells are mated, the contacts are driven into
place using a standard wrench. The connector
automatically uncouples when the pylon is manually
removed or if it is jettisoned during flight.
A new version with 121 contacts has been developed
for the F/A-18 E and F upgrade. The receptacle
for the latest version of the proven connector
is designed for "wet" mounting, permitting
it to be mounted directly onto a wing fuel tank
without leakage or other danger. Another version
of the Model 885 connector, featuring a somewhat
larger insert and shell, is being developed
for the F-22 aircraft.
